Differences between .schematic files and .schem files?

• The .schematic files are from versions 1.8 to 1.12.2, these files can be used on any version from 1.8 - 1.12.2 - 1.16.5 - 1.20 etc. (Literally any version)
• The .schem files are from version 1.13 onwards, these files CANNOT be used in versions from 1.8 to 1.12.2.

(don't be confused by having similar names)
