Cheap 16GB, 32GB and 64GB KVM VPS’s (EU) Ideal for small hosts

I’m currently renting some space on one of my EU nodes fairly cheap. The node is hosted in the UK (Bristol) and has 100Gbps DDoS protection. I own the hardware hence why the prices are low. The node is using a dual CPU setup (E5-2660, 2.2-3GHz).

Since the VPS’s use KVM virtualisation the specs below are dedicated to you, they are not shared with other customers, (excluding the uplink). You can also install and run Pterodactyl panel if you choose to, as docker does support KVM.

I will likely increase them later on, but if you buy before I raise the price it will stay at that price for as long as you have the VPS. They come with a control panel, so you can start, stop, reinstall the OS etc all yourself. Additional IP’s are also optional.

Roughly how much SSD storage would you need? The node does also have 2 SDD's which one of the VPS's is using.

Why would you use RAID 1 for HDD's, seems like a major IO bottleneck. I'd use Raid 5 or 6 if I was you.

I wouldn’t call it a major IO bottleneck. RAID 5 isn’t actually that much faster than RAID 1 in benchmarks. It also has the overhead of calculating parity which puts additional load on the CPU. Unless you have a decent RAID controller, RAID 5 isn’t really worth it. Which another drive + a decent RAID controller, would raise hardware costs, therefore raise VPS costs too.

There would be little point buying another two HDD’s to achieve somewhat faster speeds in RAID 6 either, when a single SSD would out do the 4 HDD’s in RAID 6 anyway. RAID 1 isn’t there for speed, it’s for redundancy, in case a drive was to fail. For most cases HDD’s perform just fine. Anyone that is seeking higher IO speeds, won’t want HDD’s regardless of RAID level. They are far more likely to be seeking SSD’s instead. Might have been a different story a few years ago, but SSD’s are very main steam in hosting now.

Overall, RAID 5 and RAID 6 HDD’s really wouldn’t be worth the extra cost, when it would yield so little benefit. If someone requires faster IO speeds for a specific task, the node does also have SSD’s, which has been offered to some that have replied to the thread, enquiring about SSD storage.
