I hope everyone is doing well. Four years ago, I was a young man who enjoyed Minecraft very much and invested a lot of time and money in making several different servers. I come back to ask a simple set of questions.

  • What are some significant ways the game has changed since 1.8? This could be mechanics, modes, or features.
  • Has the server community grown or gotten smaller since 2016? How about the playerbase?
  • Are servers still a popular place for people to play, or do most players use other methods to play the game?
  • Would you recommend anyone return to this community to start a server, or is interest on a gradual decline? Would someone waste their time developing and coordinating a server launch?
I hope some of you can provide some feedback here. Thanks :)

  • Quite a bit has changed from four years ago. I think someone will go into further detail about these in another post.
  • Hypixel currently dominates the servers. There are a ton of servers out there, so most of them don't really have much of a playerbase.
  • I'd say that servers are still a popular place for people to play Minecraft.
  • If you know what you're doing it isn't a waste of time. However, if you don't know what you're doing you might want to get someone who's experienced to help you. Otherwise, it's not really worth it. (That answer is for if you want to have a nice playerbase and make some money. You can still make a server if you are inexperienced just because you would like to run one for fun.)
