Simply question, is it worth paying the 140, and then the 50+ extra for an XenForo and a custom theme?

If you have a big player base or big budget, yes. If you are a starting server just go with Enjin or something and expand to your own custom xenforo in the future

I'm opening up a large network, budget is secret, but its above 1000+, just seems like a lot for a software though.

If you're launching a network with only $1000 then it's not worth.
