As far as "professional" logos, well that all depends on the market place your dealing in. Different market places will have different standards. But to start with you'll want to choose a specific logo type to focus on. There's typography, vector icons, Mascot, Hand drawn, Abstract design, and so on. So I would say choose a field and focus on learning about that specific type. Then simply find some well known logos from that field and try recreating them.
As far as to what type of logo you should make, that all depends on what software, and hardware you have. If you don't have a drawing tablet then hand drawn really isn't an option. I would suggest going for vector logos. If you need a program for it but don't have money to spend on one then get yourself inkscape.
