Why do people auction off their items? In my opinion it's just plain stupid when not carried out correctly.

An auction is where you sell the product to the highest bidder, not at a price that you're happy with. If someone only bid $5 on a $40 build, the seller is not going to sell it.

As far as I know, at the start we never said BIN and Starting Bid, where did the idea of bidding come from? And do you think people should just sell at a set price that the seller will sell it at, or do you beg to differ?

please dont be toxic, we're only here to discuss.

its generally for the seller to see if he can make more money out of it or if he doesn't get his asking price he has an offer which could be quite close. Gives a few options.
Yeah, you're right its for the seller to make more money. But IMO it doesn't really work for $5 things.

And for it to work correctly, you'd need people with a higher "balance". As barely anyone here is committed to spend $400 or something.

I agree, most people on here call it a auction when really it's some best offer BS. Thats why I keep things BIN only because I never get offers I like

I believe that when auctioning,

  • Auctioneers should be forced to state a reserve price that the item will be sold for
  • If they don't have the above then a maximum time frame for the auction/BIN
  • Forced to give the item up for the above, if it reaches the original reserve price/selling point/maximum timeframe/BIN
This would stop people from prolonging auctions, such as builds/accounts. It'd be annoying like you said, bidding $5 on something and then literally waiting a week because the seller wants to try get $6...

For stuff going to $50-$100(or more/less), I still think a reserve price is necessary. It lets people know whether you're serious or not about selling, if they're going to be waiting ages/should they pay any interest into what you're selling.

Furthermore a reserve price would let sellers set a low starting price to interest buyers, but protects you from having to sell your item at a price that you feel is too low.

It's still the seller's choice but really defeats the point of auctioning since I'd say the majority of people just wait for the "best offer", slows down buying & selling altogether in my opinion.

Auctioning is a great tool, but when there's a very low bid, its bullshit.

Auctions are bs the bids are annoying people never bid high enough so the bids get ignored and there is no bid end date because if there was we wouldn't bid because we wanna keep the price low
Should just be bins imo

Auctioning would be a great if this site actually had a fucking system to accommodate it. Half the time all the "auctions" are just people being slimey and sliding around the rule set as it goes on to try and get the most for the item. Not really an auction at all. Take Ebay for instance, it has integrity because auctions rulesets are set once you list the item, and can't be changed once the first bid. They are also binding contracts... but I guess there is only so much you can do with a forum. Too bad all that premium $$$ doesn't go towards actually putting new features into this site.

Yeah, but xenForo plugins custom made are really expensive. Sure, you could afford them with the premium $$$, but then the owner woudn't get much $ for himself.

What are you talking about? There are Xenforo plugins out there that do exactly what I suggested for like ~$50. There have been people who volunteered to help too. You're underestimating how much this site makes, and how NONE of it goes back into it.
