Some people are distributing a patched PaperSpigot. But you'd be better off just using TacoSpigot instead - TacoSpigot is a fork of PaperSpigot, and they patched their 1.8.8 server so that the incompatibility with ProtocolSupport was fixed.

A lot of people seem to use it here - albeit, old versions of it. There's a lot of possibly non-legit copies floating around, which some users state work correctly, and some users have trouble with.

I'm starting to see servers running the latest and greatest (1.12.1 for example) with PvP-oriented gamemodes a lot more lately.
