The rule about advertising discord servers is not clear. Three different staff members including Mick, say different things. There should be a set rule that tells us what is allowed.

The fact that it's a discord server is simply irrelevant; and that platform specifically shouldn't be specified in any of our rules, because any rules which apply to external platforms apply to all platforms.
It's the purpose of the advertisement and the purpose of the server that you're advertising which is relevant to our rules.
If the purpose of your server is to function as a community, and you're advertising the server to grow the community, you're violating this rule:
If you're using discord as a platform through which to provide support for your service, and you're treating it as such in your advertisements, then you're within your rights.
However, regarding shoutbox advertisements:
This rule prevents users from advertising their discord servers in chat, unless through an MCM thread link. Please obey this rule until the point comes where it’s changed.
Indeed this rule is outdated and needs updating. The staff team has already been discussing our policies and how best to support and protect our community with it.

Discord links can be advertised on site, so long as it’s not with the purpose of growing a community. If you’re advertising it in shoutbox, it needs to be through an MCM thread link.

I'll move this to pending for us to finish this discussion since we never came to a conclusion regarding this and I'm basically just using pending as my reminders list at this point.

Way to go
Since this suggestion was made rule 1.21 was completely removed. We've also added rule 1.23 which clarifies what is and isn't allowed to be advertised really well to avoid any potential confusion. Simply put, you can advertise external communities as long as they follow our rules.
