Need a good host and was wondering on peoples opinions on a good one. server will have 100-150 players active on?

Please don't advertise your hosting. Want genuine peoples opinions on a good host that is capable of this. I dont want a dedicated just yet. just reseller host with multicraft etc. because im noob at vps and dedis.

With that amount of players, i would say a dedicated server would be better. Like you said, you dont know how to set one up, however there is quite a few of us here that set them up for around $5 - 10. Some even do for a vouch. They do perform better than shared hosting so I would go for that. (SoYouStart do cheap DDoS protected dedis) that’s just my opinion though, ill leave everyone else, to put their bit in about shared hosting.

"Standing him up" won't be enough for a serious community.

He would need to go after proactive management if he would want an uninterrupted run on a VPS/dedi.

Then he could hire someone to be there as and when they are needed, a few servers do that with me. Asides, once they are setup and running, they run into very few problems, (if setup right).

Like Fire said, your best bet is a Dedicated Server with a player base like that. Shared hosting is only good for a small player base as, well, it's "shared". I'd prefer a dedicated server either way, much more freedom and it shouldn't take long to understand how to set up a Minecraft server on one / manage it, fairly simple. Tons of guides on the internet for how to.

It still reactive as you only there on demand. What happens if a drive crashes? Server freezes? or even a hacking? Could they ask you to fix them up? Sure but I PROMISE you that SOMETHING will turn up at the worst time possible.

That's where Proactive servicing comes in, these people are manning your systems 24x7x365. Whether it a full setup, a security audit, weakening an attack/hack resulting in weaker comprise of services or even a complete halt of said attack/hack, communicating with your NOC that a drive has gone "bye bye" and restoring from backups/making sure RAID is rebuilding properly, and the list goes on...

A dedicated server would be a great choice but SpaceMine 's server are by far the best that I have used!

If the drive fails, then that’s what RAID and backups are for. If you set it up correctly and take the time to secure it, hacking shouldn’t really be much of a problem. Again if everything is setup right the server shouldn’t freeze.

As for been available 24/7 there is no reason, if it is that important, not to have a few system admins on call. So if your main one isn’t available, you have say 2 others added on skype, that you can get in contact with.

Prevention is indeed step 1 but you should understand that monitoring and responding to issues BEFORE your customers tell you about them is just as important.

That why proactive management is vital for any serious operations. Because usually it prevent them from going into the "pit" or at least as low "down in the pit" as possible.
