So my question is, can I run multiple GPUs with the following build:

Intel-i7 4790k 4.5Ghz
GA-Z97P-D3 Mobo
EVGA 750Ti Sc
16GB ddr3

My friends both have spares of my graphics card and have offered me them, but I am unsure of compatibility. They said that I could get a ‘band’ that would help (wtf is a band). So can someone tell me, do I need to buy an expansion part or what?

Are you trying to run multiple separate GPU's or SLI/Crossfire config so you use muiltiple GPU's at the same time like for gaming?

I searched up your mobo and it dosen't support SLI, only Crossfire.

And is crossfire an AMD GPU only thing, or is it Nvidia as well?

Crossfire is for AMD GPU's only, SLI is for Nvidia GPU's only, so you can run AMD GPU's in a linked format but you can't with Nvidia on this motherboard. You can run ANY two GPU's on this motherboard, Nvidia or AMD, it dosen't matter, but if you go with AMD and Crossfire, it will mean that both of the GPU's are linked together and if you're doing tasks like gaming or video rendering, then both of the GPU's will be used together as a one unit, but if you go with two Nvidia GPU's, since it dosen't support SLI, they will not be linked together and they will work seperetly, for example if you're gaming, only one GPU will be used.

When it comes to expansion part, from looking at pictures of your mobo, they have a lot of spacing between so I assume two full height GPU's will fit, but before buying, I'll would check the dimensions of the GPU's incase they will not fit as every GPU is different in height, width ect and they may not fit together, which in that case you can go with a PCI-e raiser if it will fit in your case.
