Custom website vs Wordpress

I want to make myself a website and gain skill in this area but was wondering what advantages if any are there in custom coded websites. Wordpress seem fully customisable and take a fraction of the time. Is it still worth me learning HTML etc. Though?

I thought someone would say that, it just seems so much simpler. I think I'm going to start learning html and css and all that anyway for fun and experience anyway.
