Hello everyone,
Recently there's been a lot of impersonators exploiting an impersonation method, in which they can appear to be someone they're not, and it's impossible to tell them apart just by their tag.
The way they do this is by using unicode characters that appear the same as their equivalent letters,
for example, 'e' and 'е'.
Both look identical when reading over them, but when you attempt to search for the letter 'e' on the web-page, the fake 'e' doesn't show up, as shown circled in red below:
They apply this to discord tags by selecting the targets name, and replacing one of the characters with another unicode character that looks the same, and they then purchase discord nitro and choose the same tag.
Here's an example below of it happening to me.
My real discord:
Impersonators fake discord:
The tags both look indistinguishable from the other, ignoring the avatar, hypesquad and nitro emblems.
A solution to this for me, was to make a site (https://verify.zyger.me) to verify my discord tag and ID, as shown below. (I think someone else did something like this as well but I can't remember who)
It'll help prevent most people from being tricked by discord impersonators, but I'm sure there's idiots out there that would still somehow manage to fall for it.
If this has happened to you, reply to this thread saying so.
If it's happening a lot more than I think it is, I'll probably end up making a site that checks if the characters of a tag are actual letters, and not fake unicode characters.
The website wouldn't be hard to make either, so if anyone else wants to make one themselves before I do, you're free to do so. Maybe Landon might want to add it to his site https://impersonators.rip/
Keep in mind that this can be applied to more than just discord, if the other websites don't have protection for it.
Thanks!
P.S. I know there's a few threads about this, but somehow people keep falling for impersonators, and something needs to be done about it.
