Help me optimize my server? (for free)

I've been wondering how to optimize my server.

I'm running on my node - with 8gb RAM and 2x x5650. Just me online.

What gamemode? Survival?
You can obviously optimize the spigot config files but it really doesn't help much and if anything it can interfere with user experiences (since there are so many farms and builds now a day that won't work if the server spawn rate for example isn't vanilla).

If you're running on pterodactyl, I would recommend not using Aikar's flags... to minimize lag on release (when there is most people) you can pregenerate first 1k blocks in each direction.

You can obviously use plugins like clearlag but that as well interferes with player experience (since their items can despawn).
Tunity is pretty optimized already, I would say just allocate more resources if you need.
