If I Told You... I Would Have To Kill You

Enjin has a list of voting sites.. I posted on all of those.. most of those sites won't help but some will. That might get you 5 players that will stay.

YouTubers are really helpful also try finding unique way to advertising (spam bots are not unique)!

One of my friends once got a streamer to stream his server.
He had 100 new online players while the streamer was streaming and about 80 stayed.
Pretty good retention for the price.

Youtubers help, but nowadays the best ways are
1. Paid advertisments
2. A USP

USP is a Unique Selling Point - in other words, have something other servers don't. A custom minigame, or a custom gamemode, whatever. If people like it, and you're the only place they can get it, you'll get a lot of people.
I used to own the only tekkit classic server that had no banned items(This is going back a few years, before tekkit main/tekkit light) and it had at leat 80 players online around the clock. That's mainly due to people wanting to get on a server with no banned items, which was my USP. They couldn't get it anywhere else, so they had to come to me.
Although being unique is a lot harder nowadays, but it's the most effective way I've come across.

Also, there are more toplists than just minecraftservers. Join as many as you can and get people to vote. Also, PlanetMinecraft's server listing feature lets you 'bump' your server to the top of their server list once a day using a bump button in the 'edit server' page. That's free advertising - make use of it.

Buy minecraftservers.org slots, they help a ton. Our player count doubled with the week we bought (300+ players). However, if you're server isn't built to support/entertain mass amounts of people, work on making it substantial first.

Don't bother with YouTube anymore. You are either disappointed or happy and then disappointed in a month. You want a stream of players, not a few thousand over a few days that all leave after a month or two.

What would you suggest as an alternative to YouTubers?
