My friend and I are working on a server which I'm programming basically from scratch. He's the idea guy while I implement everything. At the beginning I am/will also be the person who's putting the money in however all donations will be used to cover fees first and foremost.

Though after that, I'm just not sure. I feel like 50/50 is kind of unfair since I'm doing the majority of the work and while I do think ideas and balancing are very valuable too, I'm missing out on money that I could be making taking a part time job right now in favor of this while he barely has to spend any time. He's looking for ways to help but won't learn Java so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thoughts?

He's a very close friend and passionate about the project. His ideas are really good, it's just that coming up with an idea and fleshing it out takes considerably less time than implementing it lol. I wouldn't have come up with this stuff by myself though, so I do think he deserves credit there. :' )

Anyone can have an idea, few people can make something with it. Split it according to time and money invested in the server. I'd say 70/30 or something like that would be good (from what I've read here).

In my opinion, always give yourself at least 51%. Before you do split percentages, always remember to take 30% out of the server monthly earnings, so you've always got the backup money.

51% (MainOwner) 49%(Partner)

I would say to give him significantly less profit than you if your the one doing all server side stuff. If he’s just giving ideas and your executing them it’s a big difference in jobs. it’d be the same as me telling google to make a robot and then them doing all the work to make it. I would say split profits 15 -85, but if he gives more towards the project like investment it’s a whole different story.

You have to think about this part of it as a job. As the owner, you should be handling the funds and paying them out accordingly. The server host gets some, the domain, the graphics, the builds, any maintenance you need help on, etc. Consider those, "bills".

You should get those covered, and ensure you have enough for a minimum of two to three months more paid off before you even consider the take-home. Because there will be months when donations aren't going too smoothly. Then you also want to put aside a bit of money for future builds or graphics you may want to purchase.

Then you can see what's leftover and if your partner is only coming up with ideas for you, then he definitely shouldn't be receiving an owner pay. If he's merely coming up with ideas, I'd give up about 25% if that. Sure, he may be 'passionate about it', but that doesn't mean that he's putting in more work than you are.

i’d do 60/40 or 70/30. 60/40 if he has really good, original ideas that add alot of value to your server and 70/30 if his ideas are fairly average.

tell him you'll take 100% until you get all money back and then do 80/20 or 75/25 max

You don't pay someone for giving you ideas, if you give him like 10 to 20% (40% if you've made BIG Bucks) Then that's like fine you're helping him, Why you shouldn't is because you're paying someone to use his brain which you know, anyone can do
