Hi I wanted to host my own minecraft server for a lifetime without having to pay monthly etc. Does one have to buy equipment or something?

The best most places will offer is annually. So you pay once a year and thats that
Yes I understand but I want to get a server that will be hosted by myself and run 24 7 for a lifetime, isn't there some hardware one buys?

I think he means not paying for hosting at all.

If you're looking to start a server, I suggest you learn about how Dedicated Servers work apart from regular PCs and look to something like Newegg to see how much the cost would be, or just use a reputable server box dealer.

Thank you this is what I was looking for! If it's not to much to ask, may I please have a link?

You're still going to end up paying for something, that being the expenses to colocate your servers. Another factor to note is understanding that your server won't last you a "lifetime". You're going to run into some type of minimal hardware failure somewhere along the line.

He said he wanted it at home, no colo.

Yeah... I'm not even going to bother listing the reasons why that's not going to work out as expected. I don't remember electricity being free either.[DOUBLEPOST=1444708530,1444708247][/DOUBLEPOST]
I've always wanted to do this, and when I finally move into my own house, I'll very likely do.

Just get a 100mbps line or even a 1gbps line from your ISP.
Then pay a few bucks more a month for a block of IP's. (Which will now be harder / more expensive to do.)
Then setup your network and servers accordingly.
Make your own firewalls and protection.
Then you're basically a server host.

OP just look for cheap memory, and high Ghz, sounds like you'll be dealing with MC server stuff so high Ghz processor wise will benefit. SSD's too.

Could you do it? Possibly. Would you save any money? Nope.

Most residential areas don't have the infrastructure to support gigabit Internet. You have to get that installed. How much do ISP's usually charge for gigabit Internet? An upwards of $100 if you're dealing with the big boys, Verizon, AT&T, etc. Colocating can be as low as $50 depending where you look. Don't remember residential ISPs offering DDoS Protection either. Good luck though :)

You're going to end up spending a fortune on dedicated server hardware. Not only that you'll need a cool environment with a high speed LAN speed. Plus you will be needing to know linux etc if you're wanting to install Multicraft on it. You're better off going to GalaxyNode where you can pay monthly. The price of the dedicated server equipment would probably equate to something like 5 years of Minecraft Hosting from Galaxy Node, obviously depending on the specifications of the dedicated server along with the package you buyfrom Galaxy Node.

Hope this helped, good luck in the future !

You also want to mention that the power costs alone from running a server 24/7 in your home would already be more than going with an option such as GalaxyNode.

Home host if you're wanting lifetime hosting. If you want to be realistic, earn some money and pay monthly for professional hosting like everyone else.

Pay annually, that is the closest you will get to lifetime hosting; There is no "life time" hosting that actually exists as far as I know.
