I think, for smaller server list sites, a large factor in the successful slot time is about how big your server is before going into the slot.
A slot like .org will bring people in regardless of player size. They may drop off after the slot ends, however during the time its in the slot you can be sure of large playerbase increases (even if your server has 0 people prior to the slot). You see new servers from a 0 average go to 150/200+ as soon as a .org slot starts.
A slot like minecraft-mp I think is slightly different. I think people are more inclined to skip past and ignore servers with fewer people on and because the user base on minecraft-mp is smaller, this is emphasized. If people see a server with 100/150+ people on they may be more inclined to give it a go and therefore a minecraft-mp slot may be perfect for you in this case.
Having said that, I think the only way to work it out is to give it a go.
