I want to start an MC server that I will code most things custom. I will try to create good community and bring people together. I'll start a small network while developing a whole gamemode in the background. The thing is that I have built some servers in the past, but these were, to make an understatement, really poorly made. I am now wondering, before getting started: How can I estimate the amount of ram I will need per server? Can you actually calculate this value or is it just trial and upgrade once lag starts to show.

Hey there :)

Well, there isn't really a "set" number of ram you need per server, but you can base it on what you are going to be running and how many players you are expecting on your network/server. Personally, I run a survival server with a lot of intensive plugins (total about 100 plugins) player count is low but averages around 5-15, and I'm on 12 GB.
I would recommend you to start low and whenever you're facing issues just increase the amount of ram. It's not needed to buy like 32 GB if you're fine with 6 GB for example. Just build it up.

Hope this helps.
Yes, this helps! I was wondering if you have any hosting recommendations. I was looking at mcph.

Hi there,

The amount of RAM you need comes down to the version you wish you play, how many plugins you got and a few other factors. If you'd like to get started, feel free to check us out at https://novonode.com/

Create a ticket if you'd like an estimate for how much RAM you'll need!

Hello,

As others have mentioned, it really matters on version, playerbase, plug-ins and so on. I can help walk you through that if you want on discord or on MCM. Discord: Scroll32#8539

Hey buddy. in the past i had a faction server with over 100 players on with 12gb ram. preload chunks etc. (120+-) plugins.

for hosting i'd suggest you https://mixmlhosting.com/ since they have partnership with tcpshield like pebblehost (for extra protection on ddos attacks) and you can get dedicated threads and a dedicated ip on a really cheap package

If your starting small just use low amounts of ram, really just depends on the version, for 1.8 I would say 1 - 3GB per server and for 1.18 I would say 6GB per server
