Last night Sk89q reached out to the dev community to organize a centralized collective approach and deciding where the multiplay community goes from here, considering Bukkit is most likely not coming back. There was a "town hall" style meeting on irc.esper.net #nextstep, a lot of the lead managers from many projects were there, including representation from Forge, Sprout, Glowstone, Canary, MCserver, and Curse. There is an on going discussion still taking place, and all are welcome to hit up the IRC.
There is also an ongoing doc to organize and document the discussions... https://docs.google.com/document/d/12RV9FEe7wsowfAd_fVML1tNs3MplYIQ090CO41ejsvA/preview?sle=true#
All and all it looks like a promising start, and competing projects seem to want to team up for the greater good of multiplayer MC.
