Question about name change

I get the whole UUID, but I have an account with a 2013 Minecon cape and I'm changing the name today, but I don't want to lose the name. I understand with the UUID it shouldn't but my friend said his friend lost his cape after a name change, is this possible? And if any of you have first hand experience please post.

No, you don't lose your cape if you change your name. Idk why your friend did, his launcher gliched probably.

Or your friend updated to 1.8 and can't see the cape because of that. It's buggy with new clients on servers for some reason I believe.

Or your friend was using an optifine cape those don't always change with your name
