Service Project Outline

All around the world there are households without electricity. They are forced to use manure patties, burn firewood, and burn plants, not only could burning manure release methane, it could also release fecal matter that could end up in the food. By supplying a cooking source we can cut down these costs, and use the leftover materials to rebuild, build new, or use it for other activities.

To begin, everything that we do in a day uses some sort of electricity, whether it be cooking, using lights, and watching T.V. We can use up to 5000 watts per household, a day. With houses that are struggling to cook, or cooking in dangerous conditions, we can supply portable propane stoves/grills. The cost of these stoves/grills can range from 18$ to 38$, which is on the cheap side, and each small propane tank lasts around 20 hours, which is the cooking times added up.

To raise the amount, fundraising would have to take place, it would have to involve a product that people would want to buy, but not be super expensive, or if people really did care about the less-fortunate they could donate using snap-raise. All the money raised would go to supply 2 small propane tanks, and a propane stove per family (total cost: 25$- cheapest possible). In some areas propane is widely available such as the Philippines, and many other asian countries, as well as many countries everywhere.

In some areas propane is not available. Some of these areas include, India, and many places in Africa. In this case, a good solution is a multi-fuel camping stove. Many of these burn kerosene, which is a highly accessible product in india, with the price ranging at around US 8$. The only part that is unfortunate about this, is that a decent kerosene stove is 66$. That means that the cheapest cost per family would be around 74$. If we do not use a decent stove, that means that we could bring the cost down to around 43$.

Sending these would be quite easy, they would be supplied to an organization that supplies them elsewhere, in the US, all of the appliances would go to the Salvation Army. In other countries, almost all of appliances would go to a sort of alternate energy uses, which would include appliances. In this sense, we would be able to get all sorts of appliances sent around the world and distributed to these countries.

While if sending these appliances did not work, another idea, yet expensive, would to be self distribute, in this way we would set up our own charity website, and have a tab where households could apply to receive cooking appliances, the only fault in this idea, is that houses without electricity to cook, would most likely not have wifi. The final approach for distribution would to be contact a charity and set up an agreement with them.

Please leave what you think about my idea, this is for a leadership position that I'm applying for (requirement being in or planning a service project), and I would like to see if what I have so far is decent, Thanks!
