Just make sure wherever you plan to invest that money in: won't scam you, steal from you or make a fool out of you.
Before you spend any money, ask yourself, "is my server unique enough that players are going to stay on it and donate?" (if you have donations of course)
Guarantee yourself that you'll get that money back on whatever decision you take so your server won't end up closing because of poor money management too.

It's best to rent a slot on a popular server list website in my opinion.

Can I get a good amount of players with the slots for $100?
No. You need more than $100, but you can probably get a slot for two hours.
