Why do server owners do this?

So why do server owners often make their IPs

play.serverwebsite.com

when you can have it as just

serverwebsite.com

is it safer or something along those lines?

I think when setting up DNS, it's easier to make your server's domain with a prefix so it's easier to setup a website with the same domain.

But apperantly with something called protocol checking you can do both

Many large servers do both. Smaller servers don't know how to use protocol checking and see it as easier to just use a subdomain.

so you can have play.{DOMAIN}.com for server, and www.{DOMAIN}.com for website
