Why is the '!' displayed in chat when shouting? (Essentials)

I use EssentialsChat to bypass the chat radius on my server. If you're not familiar, in order to trigger a shout, an exclamation mark must be placed in front of your message. Here is an example of the message before hitting enter:

Once I hit enter, it looks like this in chat:

The problem is that the exclamation mark is being displayed with the message. By default, this is not supposed to happen. The exclamation mark is supposed to only trigger a shout, not display it before the message as well. If you have any ideas for a fix, I'd love to hear them!
