Roman Gladiators were professional fighters who entertained the public in arenas such as the Colosseum. They were divided into specialised types, each with distinctive armour, weapons, and fighting styles:
- Thraex – armed with a small shield and curved sword, wearing greaves and a helmet with a griffin crest.
- Murmillo – heavily armed with a large rectangular shield and gladius, helmet with a fish-shaped crest.
- Hoplomachus – modelled on Greek hoplites, using spear, small round shield, and protective greaves.
- Eques – fought on horseback, armed with lance and sword, lightly armoured.
- Provocator – wore a breastplate and helmet, used a large rectangular shield and sword, often paired against similarly equipped opponents.
- Scissor – armed with a specialised, curved metal weapon (not included) instead of a conventional sword, designed to slash through armour.
- Secutor – paired against the retiarius, wearing smooth, rounded helmet and heavy armour, carrying a large shield and sword.
- Retiarius – lightly armoured, fighting with a trident, net, and dagger, relying on speed and agility.
- Ordinarius – basic gladiator, equipped with sword and small shield, forming the bulk of arena combatants. Not armoured.
