Just don't... you'll waste more time and money making and running it than you'll earn ... that's if you earn anything at all, especially with the low prices per GB these days.

Completely agree. Minecraft hosting in itself is near-impossible to compete. Everyone is looking for sub $1.50 per GB yet don't take into account that it's not all about RAM. Sure we could offer $1/gb on older hardware that supports a ton of memory but performance wise it'll suck compared to a non-oversold E3 based setup or even E5-16xx setups. Minecraft is INCREDIBLY CPU bound and a memory hog. For the most part it just is not a viable business solution at all.

If you want to learn this sort of stuff I suggest buying a VPS from somebody. Get to grips with the basics of Linux and then move on to Multicraft and such. Just don't go into the hosting business without any knowledge at all as it'll cause you stress and it's not fair on your clients.

If you want to gain experience with the hosting side of Minecraft I recommend what GoMach5 said. A VPS is a great way to learn about hosting and setups. Before you start the company you need to be very proficient with the systems you're going to use, a simple mistake could erase someone's entire server. Best of luck with what you decide to do!

You should learn all of the strings to a Minecraft server before you even attempt hosting them for others.
You should have experience running a large Minecraft server for yourself, before attempting to do it for others. (70+ playerbase)

That would be the first step.
What you are trying to do is like... opening a garage to fix cars, when you have never drove a car.

Your going into a strict minecraft business most people who do minecraft do other things also minecraft is a congested market and everyone's pricing has to be pretty much the same.

Don't learn system administration by fiddling around in a VPS for this. It's a good way to learn something, but I wouldn't trust someone with a week's experience to host my server. I've done this for many years and am certified and I don't even trust myself sometimes.

What are you actually good at? What do you know in this venture? If nothing, do you have money?

If you don't have any of those 3 things, don't bother. Experience doesn't even matter these days in this industry, it's all about how much money you have. It's not really a profitable industry anymore.

+1 I agree completely. I have been in Linux for about 3 years and still don't trust myself with somethings.

Issues will arise that will go over your head and can overwhelm you.Things will go wrong and without basic understanding even the simplest issue can break a whole system. A good example is the simple process of adding dedicated IP's. if a mistake is made, it could possibly cause you to loose the ability to connect to your server and cost $ and downtime to fix.

The market is so flooded now, you see hosts selling servers for as low as $1 a GB. This industry was profitable a few years ago, and thus the Giants we all know today rose.

However if your really intent on starting up a host or getting in contact with someone Klanx (owner of aquatis.host ) could give you some pointers, however without a lot of experience I would severely recommend against it. Take up a job with an established host and learn through them.

Any provider offering a one-time payment scheme should raise red flags immediately. It's not sustainable, period. There is power, bandwidth and space costs associated with collocation. Even if you have said server physically in your home it will still cost you money in power.
