honestly you can just use riseup's servers with OpenVPN and it's a better alternative than most of these paid vpn's lol.
I’d strongly recommend everyone stay away from free VPN services. There are several red flags (for anyone intelligent with cyber security) which include:
  • You have zero idea who own, or manages that server. That also means you have zero idea how the OpenVPN (or ant vpn protocol) server is configured.
  • Free VPN nodes can have tons of people connected, that comes with bandwidth and latency saturation.
  • Free services often lack the legal backing, and there is no stability guarantee. How does a free VPN fund itself?

Can it get around the Netflix anti-vpn?
It indeed can! We will be offering residential IP VPNs soon. We’re still in development making some essential changes. However, we can guarantee our service will bypass most DPI (deep packet inspection) systems.

If you’re really trying to hide yourself I suppose signing up for our service from a VPN would be wise... We are considering no longer storing this data point (login IP), as we can prevent abuse in other (more ethical) ways. It’s something we’ll have done before public launch.

Alright had to move this to here since i wasnt allowed to make a different thread on this

Alright before we kick start this discussion I want to point out some things
This thread may fall under rule 1.5 "Do not slander or otherwise trash another member, person, or thread." but to counter-argue that, I will say this thread falls under rule 1.5.1 (1.5.1 Do not post derogatory content in which you are not informative and constructive.) and rule 1.5.2 (Do not publicly criticize unless in a thread dedicated to the content or the reputation system.) as I am informing the audience of MC-Market and constructively criticizing this VPN service. This is also public criticism in a thread dedicated to AstroVPN therefore I would say this thread is fine. If not, tell me, thanks.

This IS constructive criticism and am informing other users what they are getting themselves into by using their service. In no way am I attacking a user per rule 1.5

I was also informed that 1.5.2 is not what I thought it was as it is poorly worded so that doesn't apply.

Alright lets start off with this. If you want a log of the entire chat I had with the owner of AstroVPN feel free to look at it here if you believe I am cropping it to make it look wrong when you think it should be right. I can also provide screenshot proof of chat logs if needed, I have already taken screenshots of the entire chat just incase he sees this thread and decides to delete all dms

Album Proof

Lets start off with their self claimed "no logging policy."
Their VPN service is just NordVPN 2.0 whether you want to think it or not
"no logging" means they do not log network traffic, which they do not.
But for everything else, yeah have fun with that.
What they log:
  • First name
  • Last name
  • IP Address every time you visit their website
  • Email
  • PASSWORDS
  • Billing Data
Cited

You might find this typical of a basic VPN company but in their own words
"We’d fully comply, giving over what we can."

Also with the no logging policy I said
"So why advertise no logs, whether you promote illegal activity or not, no logs means you wouldnt be able to assist them with locating a user regardless besides info gathered from registration on the site, ips not included"
in which he replied with
"Because we truly don’t store logs on out end. I’m not liable for what the hosting provider does, all I can do is pick hosting providers by hand..."

That is like saying, I promised to produce a phone with an oled screen but the factory produced a phone with an lcd screen in it and I know that it has lcd but I still market it as oled, but hey, thats not my fault, its the factory's fault

I also stated in that chat that ExpressVPN has USA servers but are based in BVA as well but has been proven to have no logs through GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.
Cited here and here
Yes I know that is in turkey and they might have different laws but they searched the ENTIRE datacenter and found nothing
There is no law binding datacenters in the US to keep all traffic information stored or monitored so if a datacenter wants to, they can just not log anything.

Last statement here that I will have:
"I appreciate you asking these questions, they’re fully valid. At the end of they day, If you’re trying to hide from governments, don’t use us. We don’t want or promote illegal activity."
So do not use their VPN to do what 95% of using a VPN is used for, got it.
5% of not using the VPN for what its "intended" purpose is, hiding your ip from p2p programs, not getting ddosed by skids, not wanting your isp to view what you are doing.

We really appreciate your feedback and intent to inform the community. We are always open to constructive discussions about our practices. And we really appreciate you going out of your way to point out some things that didn't make sense to you. Privacy is the top priority for us. However, a lot of the information you mentioned is actually incorrect and we feel the need to clarify. First off, we store user information in one central database that only our API has access to. All interactions the client, the web panel has with the database, goes through the API as an added layer of security. We store the least information possible. But since you need an account to use the VPN, there is some information we need to store to authenticate you. The basic information that we currently require for account creation is:

  • Username
  • Email Address
  • Password (which we store, hashed and salted, using the most secure hashing function out there).

We additionally store your IP on login so if you think your account was hacked, you can see the last login’s IP. Any other information we store is either there because you chose to enter it, is there by default for every account, is there for added security (think 2fa functionality) or is critical to the core functionality of our infrastructure. We store bandwidth used as well, we need to do this for non-unlimited plans.

When it comes to jurisdictional laws for data retention (speaking about the United Sates specifically, where were registered too) all ISPs are legally obligated to store information (Activity Data & Connection Data). Since ISP’s are private companies, they are not obligated to disclose storage duration. Odds are, if you use Spectrum or AT&T, the past 6 months of your internet history resides somewhere on a server of theirs.

Using a VPN with standard encryption prevents ISP’s from properly understanding communication, making Activity Data obfuscated. Activity Data includes the sites you search, applications, etc).

We hope to be able to clear some of the misinformation up.[DOUBLEPOST=1605143777][/DOUBLEPOST]Brand new thread design <3
