I did this for an engineering course at my old school...
Engineer a bridge out of small / household materials, and try to make it hold a bunch of weight :p
Pretty flexible since you can use a lot of different materials, and tons of different designs for trusses out there.

How about making a simple water organ? I don't know how good you are at making stuff, but you could use the principles of hydraulics to allow people to apply pressure to a number of pads that raise the water level in a number of pipes (possibly transparent, if you have access to the materials.
Then you could run air through the top part to create a musical tone. It would require some research into the matter, but that's what science fairs are for, right?
You could also see if you can get a simple Arduino and some water sensors or similar things, so that if the water is raised to the correct level for a new tone, a number of LEDs light up to make it a different color.[DOUBLEPOST=1452568516,1452568470][/DOUBLEPOST]really? closed a second before I submitted my idea? typical luck...
Next time do some research of your own before starting a giveaway like this.

lol "low", unless you're going to a private school I don't think your teacher expects you to spend anything near $40, let alone $400.....
maybe its boosted by his parents?
