hi so i'm not sure where to put this thread, think this is the right place !

anyways, friend of mine told me that mojang no longer auto-locks accounts ? whatever that means. was wondering how they check accounts for suspicious activity. i know it goes by having many ips on your account in different locations, etc.

going by that, i've had 2 realms capes on my ip, and both have since been locked - not while in my possession, but either pulled or locked afterwards. i know marc specifically handles the realms team and wants to make sure they arent sold, and i respect that. are the other capes also watched? i've been told many things from many different people. specifically seeing many translators being sold recently or discussion of their rarity/value. speaking of which, have also been advised not to change the name of special capes after getting them - does this seem like a bad idea? is that a red flag for mojang? it's just a name change, it's part of having an account. my girlfriend also accidentally used a vpn on the account i let her play on, and i, too, have accidentally done that - is that a problem ? thanks in advance.

If they manually check IPs now if they arn’t stupid they can tell apart a VPN to a home IP. And changing the name of an account that has a special cape will set of a flag. It’s like if you have a verified Twitter or Instagram and you change the name it will set off a flag so they can check if it’s stolen etc.
but what if i just wanted to change my name yk . .

I hopefully assume that mojang staff is competent enough to tell if someone is using a VPN

I mean, they are trained as employees to figure this shit out, right?

that's not what i was asking at all.

if they don't "auto-lock" anymore, how do they know to view the ips of an account, etc..

By “auto-lock” - he is referring to the lock wave of 2016. Basically Mojang automatically locked every account that was migrated on the same IP within a short timeframe. And that is correct, that hasn’t been done since 2016.

But yes, Realms capes aren’t worth buying/selling because they are monitored the most and the accounts will get returned to the original owner or have the cape removed temporarily if compromised, permanently if the original owner sold it.

Translator capes also can be risky, but not as much as realms capes. People have been able to slip under the radar by not changing the email and not telling people they own it. Publicly selling these rare capes will easily get them locked.
