Hello MC-Market,

I am making this thread due to a situation I have witnessed. After seeing walman1123 's thread on advertising on .org or server-list, I contacted him to see if there was something that we could do to help each other. However, towards the end of the conversation, he mentioned a seemingly "effective" way of free advertising, and pointed out that he hit 78 players with a normally 5 daily playerbase instantly. The pictures here can really explain the rest:

I removed my alt account name to prevent trouble, but you get the point. So my question is simply is this ok to continue daily, as he is now?

Note: The link in the Skype chat he sent me was simply of a screenshot of his server's playercount.

Not only is it not okay to do daily, it's not okay to even try. It's super unethical and very annoying. Larger servers have players because they know how to advertise correctly, not trying to steal players from other servers.

You will build your server a strong reputation for advertising on other servers and will be well-hated throughout the Minecraft community.
Exactly what I thought, thanks for the feedback!

Just don't do it, it makes your server come off as "desperate". Players will come if your server is half decent. Hey, even my server has peaked 21 of doing nothing :p.

Well everyone actually i have been doing this for a very long time. Give me all the hate you want but i personally couldnt care less. Its a doggy dog world out there and i will do whatever it takes to get players. My strategy is luring the players in, then giving them motiviation to continue playing on my server. Some of you may think that this is stupid and doesnt work but it does. I do not expect 1000's of players to come and play but i do gain 1 - 10 players per advertisement session. From all the donations i have recieved from these players too i plan to purchase my own minecraftservers.org advertisment or minecraft-mp, i have not decided yet. If you wish to hate on me more, my skype is walman1123 and i would love to hear it.

This is super unethical. Also the expression is dog eat dog world... not doggy dog xD
But really do you think staples got huge because they went into office max and handed out advertisements? There are much better ways of advertising and gaining players.

I'm going to go in-between and say we can't control what you do. It's okay if you do it, as it's up to you to be respectful or not. Nighter, Fancy, I, nor anyone else can judge you, but place yourself in the other server's shoes. If your server became successful, what would you think of someone spamming an IP on your server?
I think this is something we can judge as it violates basically every server's rules (I don't know any servers that allow advertising)
I think it is fair to say breaking the rules of a server for personal gain is not fair/good/nice/ethical/whatever. Does that make it okay to hack as well? Just because you CAN advertise there doesn't mean you SHOULD. Just because you CAN fly hack/kill aura/whatever doesn't mean you SHOULD.

My alt list took a big hit recently when Microsoft removed all those public alt but i am still standing about 90 accounts strong whos sole purpose is to advertise. :)

I'm saying it's not moral for us to judge him either, as I'm sure we've all done things wrong before, whether we admit it or not. It's not fair for us to judge his mistakes when we all have so many of our own. Yes, I'm sure he deserves punishment for his acts, but it's not up to us to call him names and such. I know I sound like a hypocrite (I'm guilty of judging) but I'm trying to change my way to be a better member and fix up this community little by little.

I think it is our job to judge. This thread was created asking for opinions. That's like saying when we in America get jury duty, it is not our job to judge someone else's acts even if we believe they are wrong. It is exactly are job to make sure that rules are followed.

Opinions =/= judging. You could say that he's not right in advertising his IP in other people's servers (obviously), but you can't just say: "You're a ******* idiot". Jury duty is also completely irrelevant in this situation; there's no one doing anything legally wrong and that's not synonymous to doing something morally wrong (in this case, advertising an IP on another server), because doing something morally wrong isn't set in stone. The reason why we can't have something morally wrong punished is because we've all done things considered morally wrong. You may argue that it would be technically legally wrong because it's against the rules, but then it would fall into the hands of the server staff to deal with; not your decision as you weren't present when he was advertising.
I disagree. This is against the rules, and is our job as a community to put a stop to wrongdoing. Why else would every decent server out there have a place to report people? So that we can make sure what people are doing is right. We can't let people go around breaking the rules. But whatever, we are going to have to agree to disagree.
In the end just don't do it.
