Advice needed on buying a server vs creating one.

So I was kind of curious as to it's worth buying a server with a playerbase already involved, or just creating a server on my own.

I have about $1200 as a budget, what could that even get me playerbase wise?

Any advice would be appreciated.

create a server. Much cheaper and you can have it to your liking.
I would say for creating the server it'll cost about $250-$600 depending on what you are doing + spend the rest on advertising in premium slots (MMP, TopG etc.) or paying YouTubers to reupload a trailer or to make a series on your server

With a $1200 budget you can surely create a nice server but you wouldn't be able to advertise it very well. A few YouTubers I've contacted before (500k+ subs) wanted $800 / video and that is one of the fastest advertising methods really.

So would it be a good idea to purchase a pre-made server for a lower price, and then change it to my liking and spend the rest on advertising? I'm certain advertisement is the most important factor when creating a server.
