I'd say intel for gaming and AMD for multi-core applications

AMD

I would say that it depends usually but as AMD has beefed up their CPUs, their single core performance is nearly at the level of Intel CPUs (therefore there's no real reason to get Intel because it's cheaper and more powerful for their multi-core usage).

Plus they're generally like what? £300/$300 cheaper than an Intel combo?

Intel's lacking pretty badly.

This depends on your use case and budget.

Intel has better engineering and is more stable than any AMD CPU you can get today. Intel has also dominated the CPU market for decades now and have been able to set their own prices without competition. Intel has a higher cost, but if you have the money and are looking for something stable to use, take an Intel. Please don't be like many of the grandparents on this thread who choose Intel because they always have been using it.

On the other side, AMD is the cheaper alternative. You will most likely not find any difference if you are a normal PC user. It's in more specific places the extra engineering Intel can come handy. I guess you are not looking to do anything specific, so I would stick with an AMD Ryzen CPU. Remember to pick Ryzen, something like "FX" or "Athlon" are a waste of money compared to what you can get today.

Intel for high-end gaming, amd for budget/streaming/photoediting (multithreaded applications)

I would say Intel if you only game, but I don't think I can even do that. Go AMD, no matter if you're looking at a laptop or desktop. Intel had it until not too long ago, but AMD took the lead with a quite big margin. If you're getting a laptop, make sure you get a 4000-series and not a 3000 series. If you're on desktop, 3000 is what you want (until the 4000 series is launched).

Intel because it's easier. However I'd recommend AMD if you're willing to spend a little extra money, but you'd get so much more bang for your buck.
