Alright so when the 3080 was released, I was waiting to try to get a Founders Edition card. Long story short, didn't get it and ended up lining up in a queue in a Norwegian store for it.

The card I'm in queue for is a ASUS GeForce RTX 3080 TUF GAMING card, which has gotten very good reviews and all. The estimated time for it to be sent from the store was November 7th, but was recently pushed to January 2nd.

Yes I've been awake and I've seen the news about the RX 6000 series from AMD, but originally didn't think I would bother waiting for it since I was about to get the 3080. Now that the 3080 is delayed for so long, is it maybe worth going for the RX 6800XT?

They say it's cheaper, and better... But didn't they do that for the 5000 series too? And wasn't that a complete flop? Also, it's AMDs first gen Ray tracing card, which also has be a bit worried, since Nvidias first gen wasn't so good either.

Idk what I'm saying anymore, leave your thoughts below, should I wait for my RTX 3080 or leave the queue and go for the 6800XT instead?

Easier to do your own thing on them (for example, someone had to make a whole linux repository *just* to get Nvidia's drivers working on Linux). I meant software not hardware
I see, thats great!

I would wait for 3rd Party reviews for AMD

5000 series was cheaper and better, Nvidia had to reduce prices on most their GPUs (not talking about the high-end obviously). For sure get an RX 6000 if you're already using an AMD CPU and are planning on upgrading it (zen3 boosts the GPU performance by around 5-10% and it's better than Intel) but just get what's in stock; look at benchmarks and stuff too. Also, raytracing on AMD isn't going to be good but unless you're actually using it a lot, why bother. If you're ever planning on switching from shitndows to linux though, then AMD has way better drivers on there compared to Nvidia.

Both cards are pretty good so just go with the best option available to you when you consider price to performance. Btw what CPU are you using?

hypothetically I would probably go AMD, but like Sullybash has said I would rather wait for the reviews to come, they'd be a couple of dollars or pounds cheaper (if I even wanted to upgrade). The biggest line in the sand for me is the encoding chip, and if they haven't improved on their VCE for the last 5 years like NVIDIA improved on their own encoder being NVENC, then I'd stick to my RTX2070. I've been keeping an eye on the RTX3000 series and in addition to their horrendous launch, they're also experiencing technical problems with cut-off points to save the manufacturer's the few dollars they save per purchase.

With the improvement of AMD overtaking Intel massively with their Ryzen setup after the last few years, I hope there's going to be some real competition into the GPU world too. AMD GPUs were really good a few years ago as I had a RX480, but were unfortunately held back by their incompatible driver support with versions of Windows 10 (which have been fixed).

Currently rocking a 970, so any upgrade will be a huge upgrade for me. Don't think I'll be switching from Windows any time soon, but I am using a R7 3700x so the AMD GPU might be a better fit.

If I was you I would wait for the RX 6800XT reviews to come out but as an Nvidia fan boy I would say get the RTX 3080 if you can get one but do your research for both checks if they would work with your pc specs as RTX 30 series eats a lot of energy so you might need to upgrade your PSU

I am waiting for all of the third party reviews, personally i'd prefer the 3080 even with some of the issues lingering with them. But with the new things AMD is bringing to the table could change my mind. With Rage Mode and the apparent benefit to having an AMD CPU & GPU could give you an advantage over anything.

If you do get a 3080, be careful with it. There have been some issues with them causing blue screens, random crashes, and other issues. It has mostly to do with power delivery from the chip set and the type of capacitors used on the card from the board partners. For example some of the cheaper cards that are close to MSRP will use the cheaper ones (POSCAP) and the higher end cards will use the better ones (MLCC). Now not all high end cards use 6 MLCCs, some will do a 4 (POSCAP) & 2 (MLCC) or a 5 (POSCAP) & 1 (MLCC). They aren't certain that this is what is causing the crashes, but it makes sense and the evidence backs it up. Nvidia did make a new driver that seems to have fixed that issue, but it shows that their drivers CAN limit the performance of your GPU. So if you are shopping for a 3080, look out for some of those issues and make sure to go with a trusted brand AND a good power supply.

Only the 5000 CPUs will benefit the card, so zen2 won't really change anything however if you upgrade to 5000 later then yea it's probably better (some B450 motherboards will get a bios update in january so you can use zen3 on them). But honestly, it doesn't really matter what you choose, all the cards are better than the 2080 ti and that card was already really good so you shouldn't really have buyer's remorse if you choose the "wrong" card.

I think I'm going for the RX 6800XT if I can get my hands on one before they are gone.
