Apple recently took Fortnite off the app store for circumventing the built in payment gateway that takes a 30% fee of all purchases and using their own without the fee.
Apple said this:
The thing is, this isn't true.
Amazon was offered special treatment by a high ranking executive at Apple.
This was a strategic move by Epic Games to provide further evidence against Apple in the Antitrust hearings currently going on in the United States, when Epic Games begun using their own payment processor, they lowered the prices, allowing the US to argue it is a pro-consumer move to open up the platform.
It is also speculated that Epic Games is looking to launch a games streaming platform similar to GeForce NOW and Shadow, which Apple recently prohibited.
I expect this will end either with Epic Games acquiescing and simply having to endure the fee, or them waiting it out and hoping antitrust regulations roll out for Apple, that prohibit them from setting up their platform in such a way that they can charge a 30% fee without any way to circumvent it.
