I want to start a Pixelmon Server, i have all the money and resources and while i want to do it for fun i wouldnt mind some profit. My main concern is that after pouring money into it i wouldnt even get player. Is Pixelmon still popular?
I think Pixelmon servers are still popular. I adore Pixelmon mod and would love to have a server of my own but I think a con that comes with it is it isn't as easy to access as vanilla Minecraft so it would need more promoting to attract people. Also on the other hand I've been on some Pixelmon servers that get a steady 30-40 players daily and they're doing fine also. So I would say if you feel your in the right place to make one go for it! You may have some rough patches than you may a vanilla server but with hard enough work I think you could bring in some player base to your server!
Pixelmon is a bit of a niche server type as players really need to go the extra mile to download the mod pack or launcher to play the gamemode. I assume this is the equivalent of asking, how many people are willing to download the badlion client just to pvp? BTW, I know nothing about badlion if that isn't clear so that might not be the right reference. I feel like it gets trendy every other year during the summer time when groups of youtubers upload pixelmon videos. I don't think many people reach a level of enthusiasm to try (heavily) modded minecraft till they become veterans, or consider Pokémon in minecraft till they are presented with an advertisement of it.
For me and most of my friends who play casually don't want to go through that hassle to download everything and play a lot. We enjoy simple servers with cool and fast minigames. This is just from my view and you will definitely get players if you work hard enough, but in my opinion there already are enough pixelmon servers and you would be better off making a different server (unless you have a game changing idea that is something fresh to the pixelmon community).
Generally, Pixelmon servers follow by the same rules as all Minecraft servers,
Advertising (Through ads): Brings more people to your server but it isn't a guarantee.
Youtubers: Bring viewers (Typically of a younger age) that want to play with said YouTubers.
Staff: Due to an influx in the players you're going to want to hire more staff, which is when you need to consider highering a staff manager that has professional experience.
Builders: Now you have an influx of donators you are going to want to spend some considerable money on new terrain and spawn.
Here's a list of people I have on this account that I highly recommend. (+ some people I searched for)
