Assistance with Essentials

I have been experiencing this issue for far too long now.
Each time I try to paste any of these icons ✔ ✘ » ✯ into the essentials config, it either breaks, or just flat out doesn't work. I have seen this been done before, and cannot figure it out!

I am using EssentialsX...

I do remember in the past that I needed a special character to put in front of the symbol for it to work.
It was like a greek letter A I cannot remember though.

Hm, I only ever used "»" but I remember you could put it in no problem
