50kb limitation? Really? Is there a bandwidth shortage around here?

Can we get this increased some? At least 200kb. Also, what about enabling animated gif for avatars? This used to be enabled. What was the reasoning for turning it off?

Would appear that the size limitation of avatars is a recent change AND broken. Can't even upload a 40kb png for avatar.

I'm not a fan of the gif profile pics, seems unneeded, but I do agree with your point on the data cap. I feel 100-200kb should do it, but the more the merrier ;)

There's really no good argument as to why we can't have it. If you think it's unnecessary fine, but I bet a lot of people would argue the contrary. I'd take animated avatars any day over all the fucking obnoxious huge signatures so many have.

Well, personally I find them annoying/slow down loading. But then again, I also find gifs/banners in signatures annoying aswell, so it might just be me :)

The reason behind this is that if you load a thread with 20 different replies and they all have a 100kb avatar, it can take a while to load the page for people without good internet.[DOUBLEPOST=1454235395,1454235372][/DOUBLEPOST]
I'd agree with you if it was like 2003. If your computer has a hard time loading a forum with some animated gifs, you might want to consider an upgrade.
It has nothing to do with your computer. It's all your internet.

Uhhh... 100kb * 20 is 2Mb. Are you guys on dialup in 2015?

And huge animated images in signatures is quite okay tho? No offense, but that's a bullshit excuse. If bandwidth was seriously a concern you'd disallow people to have such over the top sigs.

Is this the only forum you use? Most large communities do enable animated avatars, including minecraftforums, and it works just fine. Browsers have this new cool feature called cache that keeps you from having to re-download commonly accessed files. /s

But on a more serious note. The site gives a dialog error when trying to upload an avatar, even when it's below the new 50kb max. Tried uploading a new avatar that was only 27kb.

Just to help illustrate how unreasonable this really is... If 20 people had 100kb avatars that would only be 2Mb. If you were seriously concerned about people's bandwidth you'd do something about signatures.

This guys signature alone is 3.3Mb http://www.mc-market.org/threads/70657/#post-860205
This shit is all over these forums. People with a bunch of large images in their signatures, and we ask to just get a small improvement to avatars and you tell us no because of loading. uh, yeah, ok. Real sound argument.

I'm not, but some other people still have slow internet.

You can disable those. And yes, people do disable those so if it's really bothering them they can do that.

Most large communities do enable animated avatars, including minecraftforums
That's why their loading speeds are patato.

Signatures are hosted externally, so it doesn't affect our bandwidth. We have plenty of bandwidth anyways.

So that's a totally moot point. Why even mention it?

Minecraftforums loads a lot smoother than this forum. Even if you disable signatures it still loads images in the background, they're just hidden. Switching the element to display:none, is visual only, the image still has to be dynamically parsed, and it's not an optimization tool. Again, if this was about conserving people's bandwidth, there are far bigger things that can be cut.[DOUBLEPOST=1454260662,1454259944][/DOUBLEPOST]Even if you don't want to increase avatar size beyond 50kb or enable animation, for the love of God, at least fix avatars. You can't upload anything.
