With all these opinion threads, I thought I’d post one myself!

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/new-jersey-residents-may-be-hit-with-rain-tax

Quote:

“The bill, approved by the New Jersey Assembly and the Senate, would allow municipalities to create utilities that can collect fees from homeowners and business owners that have large paved surfaces, like driveways and parking lots. During storms, rainwater mixes with pollutants on those surfaces before running into sewers and drains. The funding from the fees could be used for upgrades to reduce the impact on the environment.”

Imagine having to pay tax because of natural forces beyond your control. I mean taxes are already too high and now rain might be taxed.

What do you guys think?

We literally can't control that, literally makes no sense.

There's no way in hell there's not going to be insane backlash over this.

I think giving the issue some time will result in different solutions to the problem. But to answer your question, I think the idea is great, but the way to accomplish it (taxing) isn't the correct path to follow.

Exactly!
There's no way in hell there's not going to be insane backlash over this.

IKR, I’d like to think that a lot of people from both sides of the political spectrum would think that paying for something which you cannot control is pretty absurd.
Sounds like New Jersey is turning into California.

Haha, my thoughts exactly!

Jeez man! I understand the concept of being accepting, but learning the history of what people are sexually attracted to is really stupid and doesn’t belong in classrooms.
What defines rain? Is one drop of water rain? What happeneds if it hits one side of the city

I thought about this as well. I don’t see how this would even be properly enforced, at least not in a practical and non-costly way.

Yeah, taxing it is definitely absurd. Depending on how high the taxes are (and how much it rains), I’d imagine that less-fortunate people might have to move to smaller properties or apartments because of this.

And thanks to our government system, stupid shit like this will never be voted in. Next!

I know you’re from Canada, so are you saying that stuff like this wouldn’t happen in Canada or in the US?

Because in the US, California to be exact, knowingly infecting someone with HIV became legal no longer a felony, because they said it was “homophobic” to think otherwise..

In Australia we don't get rain :/ It has not rained in months and when it does it is only for a max of 5-10 mins.

Alright well first of all woah woah woah hold up, I dont get into these huge debates about homophobia or whats legal/not. All I was trying to say is there's a voting system in place to stop things like this from passing. I'm also not claiming stupid votes can/cant/havn't passed either. But, 9 times out of 10, if its something people don't agree with, the system works, and the vote wont pass.

As many people would disagree with this, I'm on the fence.
Yes, I don't like being taxed for something from nature that is as simple as rain. But when the motive is directly linked to "The funding from the fees could be used for upgrades to reduce the impact on the environment.”
Then I am fine with that.

I see. I just brought it up as an example of stupid laws that can pass :p

I live in New Jersey and this sounds like more of governer Phil Murphy’s bullshit. The taxes are already high because of NJ being a blue state. They want to add more for no reason.
