Hello MC-Market Community,

As my server shortly approaches finishing status, we have been looking into advertisement sources to help expand our playerbase. We have debated between TikTok and YouTube as our main sources of advertisement, but I would like to hear your opinions on this! I'm open to all opinions about both platforms such as downfalls, benefits, and issues with some of these platforms for Minecraft Advertisement.

To be honest with you, YouTube is a great way to advertise. It can, however, be really pricey. Any short form of video advertising to me is a fantastic way to reach an audience. TikTok ads I have yet to test, but plan to here really shortly.

Word of caution, stay away from Discord ads! These are nothing but a scam. The most you will get is a thousand people in your Discord who do not talk, do not react to free giveaways, and do not play on your server or purchase from your store. I tested the theory after 2K people joined and did not talk. Literally gave away $100.00 for anyone who reacted and my regular people reacted, the bots did not.

Right now I'd say through TikTok. It recently took the first place for the most visited website on the internet, even beating google. Plus their algorithm for sharing videos is made to get you addicted to post more and more videos by making your first couple of videos blow up to the 100k+ views. So you could just make an account (god help you if you do) and make your first 3-4 videos about your server and you're golden. Also this method is proven, an acquaintance of mine got their server popular by doing it. I'd stay away from YouTube because its just not worth it anymore ever since Minecraft started dying again.

TikTok and whatever tiktok you make put it on YouTube as a yt short too. My old Network went from 30ish players to 400 from tiktok alone.. its an insane platform and literally takes one viral video and you're sorted.

I think a combination of media platforms such as Youtube and TikTok. I think the best option is to spend some time looking for popular content creators and then understanding what they charge. Once you have that info make a decision based on your budget and content creators you are in contact with.

This is how we got to our first 20:
As a struggling new server (without a budget) we tried everything free that was possible:

1. Voting sites - but that never really worked out well, because people don't usually scroll down to the new servers, but instead join the popular ones. Of course there are the so-called "indie gamers" who join the new servers, because they enjoy a smaller community or maybe some more specific features.

2. Word of mouth - this didn't really work out that well, but we got some new members to our discord by making invite locked giveaways, so people had to get for example 5 invites to participate in a giveaway to win $5 worth of store credit.

One day I was scrolling on TikTok and procrastinating, while I came across an advertisement for a Minecraft server.
Keep in mind that I live in a country with less that 3 million people, so TikTok recommends a good amount of videos in your language to viewers.

The "ad" that I saw wasn't really an ad. It was something that was inviting, but still looked like it was community made.
I decided to make something like that.

Our videos got thousands of views for free in days and people started joining our server.

Please don't say Minecraft is dying.

It really comes down to you deciding what kind of promotion you want to do -

  • Facebook is horrible for any younger audience marketing, you really should only use a Facebook page for a "catch-all" of your posts on other sites.
  • Instagram can be used well if you pair both standard posts and reels, but focusing too hard on either one won't yield great results.
  • TikTok seems to be a popular option, however the algorithm is ever-changing as it's truly the first large scale social media platform using a heavily integrated machine learning algorithm. TikTok definitely comes down to initial engagement (making sure you have some people interact with the video immediately, and timing your posts).
  • Twitch can be heavily useful, by partnering or sponsoring live-streamers you can guarantee players to join in the short term and if you have a solid product to back these first joins you'll find good retention.
  • YouTube is king in my opinion, everyone and their mom uses YouTube in some way and it arguably has the highest concentration of content directed towards gaming and Minecraft in specific.
