For Minecraft networks, the gold standard has always been XenForo but I have used 3 of the main modern forum boards. MyBB, XenForo and IPS and I'll tell you a bit about each. A BIT. I'm tired.

IPS or Invision Power Suite is used by Linus Tech Tips forums. It has a very appealing default interface and can be easily customized. on the surface that it. the actual template files are unreadable garbage and making a theme is super difficult. another thing is the price. it is expensive for each module but covers a much wider array that simply just forums. there are forums, markets, web pages, blogs, and more. If you are made of money and want a powerful and attractive forums. IPS is not bad at all. It's very sexy.

MyBB or My Bulletin Board may look very dull at first, but it has always been a developers DREAM. It is completely FREE and OPEN SOURCE meaning you can customize it to your liking to do anything you want. The templating is super simple once you learn it. It's just HTML how you would regularly use without IPS's 1000 sub templates, its much less. There are a variety of plugins made for free to let you expand the user's experience. If you want a forums you can hack inside and out and have total complete control. MyBB is a personal favorite. Although a downside is i you aren't a developer, you're gonna want to hire your own designer because none of the free themes look very appealing.

And finally, let's say you aren't a programmer or web designer, and you're hurting for cash. You want a forum that looks nice without any hassle. XenForo has been the gold standard for minecraft for many years. The plugin system is so simple. Practically drag and drop. Recently XenForo has overhauled their interface and backend with Xen 2.0 and it looks very sleek indeed.

I cannot speak for nameless or flarum because I have not used them in production but here are my 2 cents anyways. Flarum looks very appealing and AJAX is always a sexy plus. However It's made to be and stay simple and might not be able to have the integrations that others may have also a huge downside is that it is largely incompatible with the majority of cpanel hosts that do not support command line access as it requires composer!. Customization is also a bit lacking. Try it if you like it I suppose. NamelessMC is simply not up to par with any of these other options in terms of customization and flexibility. Although it's default theme is okay, unless you are operating just a small service or a small server I would not recommend. I would look at least at Flarum's direction if you can use it and want something sleek looking. I will say it is nice that is open source so it's good for developers that want to build on top of something less bloated than MyBB.

TLDR
MyBB, Nameless for developers. ITS FREE! MyBB is more extensive and can be made more powerful and Nameless is a much simpler, less bloated alternative. Can be used on a shared webhost.
XenForo, IPS: Great interface front and back, easy simple customization, and easy to setup right out of the box. Expensive though. Can be used on a shared webhost.
Flarum: simple program and sleek theme but might not run on your shared webhost.
