Best way to gain players?

Hello,

After working on my server for three months I finally released it yesterday and the main problem i've found is getting players. I currently have voting setup and have got all the players that have joined to vote, but no one is joining except people who want staff. I don't have money to spend on advertising so I've contacted a few people on here who do Free Advertising, but I don't know how much that would help. The server it's self is a custom coded SkyBlock Server (excluding a few plugins from BDev) so I've spent a lot of time on it. Does anyone have advice for gaining players without paying?

If you are trying to do it as free as possible, I would recommend going to Minecraftforums.net and planetminecraft.com, and posting two posts at each one. The first will be posted in the server hiring section, looking for youtubers with at least 100 subscribers (both those forums are mostly free-be sites, so people do most things for free), the second will be posted in the server section where you advertise you server. Then on planetminecraft, at the home page, click the servers button, then click the post your server button near the top of the page.

The advertisement threads will get a bunch of interested people who may or may not stay- depending on the quality of the server, and how close to your advertisement's description it is.

Also, custom server is always the best way to go. I think your only problems are getting people on and maybe adding more content; so when people get bored of playing skywars, they have another game on YOUR server to play.

Unless you've got money to spend on advertising it's going to be extremely hard for you to grow, especially if you've generic gamemodes rather than something unique. I'd recommend saving up until you can afford a .org slot, and not for a couple of hours but an entire month (or 2 weeks, however long they rent them for). I've rented a .org for 3-5 hours here and there and trust me it's a waste of money. Ideally you'd get a MCSL slot or a bigger YouTuber, but they're even more expensive.

I'd recommend you save up all your donations and spend them on 2-3 hours of .org at a peak time. Then you will be able to expand from there.
