Hi,

I'm getting a laptop upgrade to a Yoga x390 towards the end of the year.

My current laptop doesn't support Thunderbolt 3 but the x390 does; so I've been thinking about grabbing an EXP GDC w/ a GPU and running with that for some extra beef.

For a budget of around $275 usd, what graphics card could/should I get that's relatively beefy but in budget?

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

For 1080p, a 2060 is pretty overkill and you're going to have a cpu bottleneck with majority of laptop cpus anyway. For whatever reason I stuck a 2060 in my brother's computer anyway because I got it for $250 on r/HardwareSwap so it may be worth looking around on there if you don't mind a used one - majority are fine and will perform as new if you replace the thermal paste.
I would go for a rx 580 (~$100 used) and an external gpu enclosure (which I honestly don't want to check the price of). Go for a 590 or 1660(ti) if you see a good deal on one. The 1660/590 is 10% faster and the 1660ti is 20% faster.
There are rumors of a 1660 super and 1660ti super coming out so may be worth waiting a little bit but no known release date currently.

Do you need to buy new? If not, I’d say to pick up a Vega 56 or 64, but that’s because I’m an AMD fanboy.

Also, I’m selling an eGPU enclosure right here on MCM.

if you can make up another 55$, I would recommend getting an RTX2060.
I probably can't go that much higher, plus as someone else said, I think the RTX 2060 is overkill for the laptop. Thanks though, I appreciate your input <3
1660 , or a 2060. ( + 30 or 40 on your budget )
^^, thanks though.
the RX 580 should be good
Honestly this seems the best option out of the ones I've seen. Relatively cheap and still within budget and is kind of on par with the 1060. Cheers.

Eh, used or new doesn't particularly matter to me. Also, what one are you selling and for how much?

Cheers, but I don't have the money for it. Good luck with selling the enclosure :)
Thank you! Out of curiosity, what’s your budget? Perhaps I could recommend something more appropriate.

$275 usd absolute max for a GPU + the cost for EXP GDC. Haven't got the money yet but I'm trying to save up. The amount is just a goal honestly at this point.

Thats going to be tough. You can definitely get a GPU within $275, but I don’t think you’ll have enough for an enclosure. The cheapest I can think of are $150 on the used market. Though you might always find a good deal on EBay or something.

I’m on another forum that specializes in this, it’s called www.eGPU.io
You will find better advice there.

I'm not fussed about the enclosue (hence why I'm getting the EXP GDC). Thanks for the tip :).

Ah, I’d forgotten what that was and had to look it up. I have a concern. In your first post you mention your new machine had a Thunderbolt 3 port. But the eGPU connector you’re buying runs off mini-PCIe. I just assumed you’d be using the TB3 port to run the eGPU. Are you really okay with opening up your machine to plug into mini-PCIe? Is there even an available mini-PCIe on you machine?!

Hm, now you mention it, probably not. You're right. I'm gonna have to look into it a bit more...

Yeah, you wanna be careful about compatibility before dropping a lot of money on this. I’ve made some expensive mistakes myself.
