Was thinking about building a server, not really sure where to start.

I have built a PC before and know how to, not really sure what to do about servers. I purchase web hosting and Minecraft dedicated hosting a lot and it'd save me a lot of money to build a server and host it from my home instead.

How would I go about doing this?

PebbleHost
High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

For the people who are PM'ing me, no. I don't want to buy your premade setups, people don't even read the threads these days lol.

Bad idea. Servers are meant to be kept in a datacentre or a similar environment. Where they have redundant power and internet. If your power or internet goes out so does your server. You're internet speed is alot slower than that of a DC too. Then you also have to consider the power consumption and noice. You would need to build a tower server, most rackmount servers would make too much noice to keep running 24/7. Then you need to consider DDoS protection. You dont want your home internet and server getting taken offline.

If you would like to buy a server and use it for web and minecraft hosting. You could do with looking into colocation.

The only situation in which you want to use a home-hosted server is if you're still working on it and don't need it to be playable for anyone except you and friends or staff. So it might still be worth it to build a server to use at home, but not for saving money on a commercial server. Instead, use it as a testing and development server.

HOW TO MAKE A MINECRAFT SERVER

You need to start by deciding its name, and getting a quite good budget, gamemode, and what
you want it to have (Builds, plugins). Then, you'll need to actually pay builders and coders/build and code it yourself.
ONLY after development and builds are done, you should get the website and the artwork. After the website and the artwork is set up. You need to get a team that will be able to do a good job and works together as a team. Create social media accounts, discord server (not necessary). WHEN that all is done you need to gather your budget for making a video trailer, get YouTubers to upload videos about the server, and use the rest of the money on the advertising websites. Of course, before advertising, you'll have to set up the launch date and time and have a staff meeting before to get everything ready. Then, RELEASE!
And there you go, you have yourself a server, with a quite good player-base.

NOTE: It's the BASIC to get a successful server.
NOTE 2:
a home-hosted server isn't good because the professional hosting by a professional team offers you many features you will not have if you will use a home-hosted server. Your server would be doing much more lag, you'll have many problems with organizing it, and I have many more problems I can tell you.
The biggest Minecraft server is hosted from a professional hosting team.

What you just went through in your whole essay is not even partially what he wanted to know. Fire has already answered the whole thing which is more in depth than your explanation...

I don't really find that as a competition. I answered it the way I felt right.

Home hosting isn't worth it if you don't have good internet.

People could just easily hit you off + the connection would be ass

Except he's asking how to build one of these:

Not one of these:

Either way: I completely agree with what Fire has said. You should not be running your server at your own home unless you are ready for a noticeable increase in your energy bill (depending on server size), have decent DDoS protection (which ISPs don't give free), have a fast connection, and have parts on standby for the event of a failure (debatable, but I think having replacement parts on standby is better than waiting a few days for them to arrive, especially if the server is being used commercially).
