Can you still make a 1.8 server?

Hey y’all.

simple question: I was wondering if servers are still able to be 1.7.10/1.8 or just pvp servers in general. I don’t see a lot of pvp servers anymore, just survival and i have 0 interest in making a survival server.

Let me know your thoughts.

Given we're on 1.16, it would be a very bad idea to make a 1.8 server, and even worse for 1.7.

There are plenty of Minecraft protocol hacks for even modern versions of Minecraft. Use those.

Edit: And this is where I justify myself because using a 7 year old game version is just going to open you up to a lot of issues, and you can get good client compatibility backwards even with new server versions via protocol hacks.

Yeah I’m aware of those. But I’m not looking to make a SMP or towny. I’m looking mainly towards a factions or kitpvp. But do people play those on 1.16?

Hey, I am completely opposite of Ally. I think there is a hell of a demand for 1.8 kit servers. Just gotta find your set of players that like kitpvp. I know I wouldn't like playing on 1.16 kit. Just my opinion.

Again protocol hacks. 1.8 pvp is completely possible on newer versions; that's my point.

Appreciate the feedback. I’m considering factions or kitpvp haven’t decided. But I just see the amount of saturation with servers right now, and want to do something different. But anyway so there’s still an audience for it?

I think so, if you can market it right. Gotta be able to reach the right audience for it.

Most servers I would say still use 1.8 for pvp as its still the most popular multiplayer version. The way I see it, there are a lot of 1.16 servers but there is a bigger playerbase in 1.8 servers, of course you would still be able to do servers in that version, imo its still the most popular version of server.

Any server with pvp should be running on 1.8 - just add compatibility for 1.7.x - 1.16.x to join

Okay but serious question; why? If you can get 1.8 combat on 1.16, or 1.12, whatever you choose, why would you want to use a version that's 7 years old? You'd think that a newer version for the server would have better bug fixes, security fixes (depending on what fork you choose), and running an older client would be fine...?

It's the difference in PVP mechanics, I believe that he's trying to say that it's way different having a PVP plugin for 1.16 than it is having your server on 1.8, and to be honest, I completely agree, the limitations are not as fun but I guess you'd have to live with that if you want nice PVP mechanics.

People from the 1.8 community are just mindset about who can click the fastest. A lot love it because of all the tools/utilities/macros you can use to boost your clicking speeds.

I've met a lot of people from the 1.8 community that didn't even know there were Fishes in Minecraft nowadays from 1.13, it's kind of sad.

I dislike 1.8, simply because the community is toxic.

Just removing the cooldown for 1.9 pvp is still noticeably different than 1.8, it doesn't feel the same. Also, the majority of pvp players use a client and they may not want the hassle of having to change to versions where that client may not be compatible.

A common misconception is that 1.8 pvp is all about clicking fast, and that's incorrect - it's all about aiming, movement, potting, etc. It's also a lot faster-paced, for me 1.9 pvp is sluggish and slow and not enjoyable.

There will always be a huge number of players using 1.8 rather than newer versions. I'm a developer so I understand that backwards compatibility so far is a HUGE pain in the ass at times.

A server running 1.8 can have compatibility for 1.16 players to join, which for me is the ideal solution for factions/kitpvp/related gamemodes, which is what OP was querying about. Also, for factions, the majority of custom JARs are for 1.8.x

For survival, towny, creative, any gamemodes where pvp is not seen as much but building is, for sure use 1.16

Also 1.16 performance is horrible lol

I really appreciate your reply! You expressed all my concerns here. It’s very intensive I heard to run a 1.16 server, and any version above 1.8 to me isn’t enjoyable to play, hence why I wanted to do a pvp game mode. So, the question I have now is there enough players playing pvp game modes to even make one anymore?[DOUBLEPOST=1615860755][/DOUBLEPOST]

Eh. It wasn’t toxic per say. The HCF scene was toxic, but that was just a niche in the grand scheme of the version. Honestly any version for me past 1.8 isn’t enjoyable at all, and feels like a totally different game. Hence why I want to stick to a pvp game mode. I appreciate the insight though.[DOUBLEPOST=1615860933][/DOUBLEPOST]

Again thanks for the reply. To me though, I don’t care if anything in the game is “outdated”. I know I’d hate making a server in a version newer than 1.8, as the newer ones feel sluggish, and the game totally shifted from there on.[DOUBLEPOST=1615861065][/DOUBLEPOST]

Surprised it’s still the most popular version. Honestly the reason why I want to stick to 1.8 and pvp type modes is because there’s so much saturation with servers now. They’re all survival or towny or a hybrid of the two. All carbon copied, some even corporate (some networks in that case). Thanks for this, really made me feel confident in pursuing this.

Yo add me on discord I'll easily be able to help you with all this as I'm just about to release my very own PvP network and we're estimating a lot of players; TheHighFly#7249

If you think Survival servers are all carbon copies, wait till you see Factions lmao. One thing I would be weary about when making factions servers, is that the community expects payouts these days. I used to run one 2012-2015, and back then everyone was cool with just vibing, and resetting the map twice a year. Now you see shit like this fairly frequently

Fuck factions now. I don’t even consider it factions. It’s just a cheap cash grab at this point. I’m not going to get into my rants on that stuff, but that’s what’s hard now. Monetization ruined a lot of classic game modes and ideas.

Yeah, its not really the server owners fault. Faction leaders have just found ways to manipulate kids free time during the pandemic and turned them into sugar cane grind machines so that the leader can win the money
