Heyo,

I'm looking at capture cards to record gameplay on my laptop.
The games I'm trying to record run fine on my laptop, but when recording with Obs on the laptop whilst playing it's very iffy.
Just wondering if I should be getting an internal or external capture card to record whilst having my laptop run as it normally does.

I do have an old-ish pc (not a gaming pc) that can be used to record my laptop, no idea how I would go about that, but saw that is something people do?

Let me know if you can help.
Thanks,
Note :)

It's pretty simple - you don't need a capture card. You only need the capture card if you're recording from console to PC/laptop, or from PC to PC.

What is your laptop specs? If you have a GTX1600 or RTX graphics card, then you have the Turing encoding chip, and won't need a secondary PC to record.

Not a gaming laptop, how would I go about using my separate pc to record?

In that case, then look up NDI for OBS. https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-ndi-newtek-ndi™-integration-into-obs-studio.528/

This solves your problem without needing a capture card.
What will that do that keeps my fps fine when recording on my laptop while gaming?[DOUBLEPOST=1635855011][/DOUBLEPOST]
Did you try using ShadowPlay to record your games? Anyways, in my opinion, I would get a capture card.
How does an external capture card work?
Would I plug it in to my secondary pc and then record my laptop gameplay through my pc or whatever?

No, just plug the capture card in your laptop. And it should work. But do some research before buying.

So just get an external then, since internal can only be used with desktop right?

"This plugin adds simple audio/video input and output over IP using NewTek's NDI™ technology."

It does the same thing as a capture card would, but over the network. So no need to shell out $ for a capture card such as an Elgato, Avermedia, Razer, etc.

Don't think my WiFi is good enough for that I won't lie. I'll give a capture card a try and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help :)

Fair enough bro, worth suggesting some other options. Crossing my fingers a capture card will do well for you.

Thanks, my bday in 2 days so I'm getting it then.
If the capture card doesn't work as well as needed would the suggestion you made work alongside using a capture card, or does it not work with capture cards?

It'll work simultaneously - but using NDI would defeat the point of having a capture card in the first place.
