How receptive would the community as a whole be towards new gamemodes? Would they be welcomed as a new take on old ideas, especially with the seeming return of many players who had quit for multiple years, or are people too invested in traditional modes such as factions or popular 'trending' modes such as Bedwars?
Just an interesting thing to think about, especially if some servers begin to monopolize certain gamemodes, ie there can only so many factions servers so players may be more likely to gravitate towards large existing servers as the only differentiating factor become the number of players to compete against.

I personally think that the up rise of Minecraft was because of old players coming back for the nostalgic feeling. Basically the reason why thinks such as survival became bigger again. I think right now you'd need a very good idea to make it work. Maybe in a few months or so, when players start getting bored again. the moment would be better to create such a server (though this could mean starting now wouldn't be so bad actually).
Again I kind of feel like people are just here for the old gamemodes right now. Though if you create something which just works all together really well, you'd be able to get the community to like the gamemode anyway.

Yeah, that makes sense. It is definitely nostalgia that's causing the uprise- just look at the focus on OG minigames on the Minecraft Monday streams as a prime example. However, as you said when people start getting bored something new will find it easier to grab their attention. In terms of nostalgia, there are also attempts to bring back old servers that have been closed for years; if this happens even more players are likely to return which can only really be a good thing for the game.
