If you didn't notice at this point, Chat Moderators isn't REALLY the main focus here..
Why do we focus on hiring CHAT moderators, when we only need moderators.

I say we skip hiring chat moderators, given the chat can be handled by 1-2 members.
And only hire moderators.
This would be very smart for one reason, and that is so they can help clear backlog, help overall with reports, and stuff so others can focus on the backlog, and then we can go back to having chat moderators, and moderators hiring, once we can get this fixed.

Leave thoughts below, main thought is to focus on hiring moderators, and promoting to moderator, and not having so many chat moderator hirings.

While I 100% agree with your statement, the main reason why there are the chat moderators is for an introduction to the moderation team + moderation of a forum. It is simply for training.
Not needed right now, there won't be a need for moderators when this market is dead, because of how it is ..
They need to get this figured, before they can go through "simple training" for staff...
Because there won't be a need for training when there is no one to moderate.

This response is not directed at you catfish, it is directed at the reason you gave which I have heard from lots of people before.
But why is there a need for training and an introduction? There cannot possibly be that much one can learn from moderating the chat, especially if they are an active community member. Additionally, there also isn't that much "training" to go through in terms of XenForo moderation itself--I was taught all the different moderation systems back at MCSG in 2015 and have used them hundreds of times since. Most places, such as MCSG, have Forums Moderation training compiled into a 2-hour training where you read over a document of examples, are provided templates, and are taught basic thread moving, editing, locking, and etc.

TL;DR- I am sure some of you will disagree with my opinion but I really don't see a reason for a sort of permanent trainee rank such as chat mod--and by "permanent" I am referring to those few staff members who are seemingly stuck at the rank and don't move up to moderator, I am not saying those staff deserve moderator but are they actually stuck in a training phase or do they simply not make the cut for moderator and if they don't make the cut for moderator but stay as a chat mod, why stick by the stance that chat moderator is a trial rank?

Giving people the moderator rank straight away is like throwing a child, who can’t swim, into the deep end of the pool.

The chat moderator rank allows us as a moderation team to make judgements. Before we handed these guys this rank, we knew nothing about them. Not their competence, judgement, attitude or schedule as a representative of this site. We need time to see who can consistently be active, or see certain mistakes being made far too many times etc. Imagine the backlash we would get for hiring someone who then proceeds to grief the whole market with his moderator permissions. Time is a factor to build trust among your peers.

Furthermore, you would believe chat mods only ‘moderate chat’, but they are given many more opportunities to assist with site matters such as support requests and reputation disputes. Experience is gained and they learn more about how things are processed by the moderators. We even discuss matters internally etc - other factors to learn from. And from this, we continue to make judgements on their capabilities.

I fully support the chat mod trainee position as I was once one too. I started off as a clueless chicken. It was a bit overwhelming to say the least. At that point, I was not interested in more responsibility as I tried to get my grips on my current role.

When you don’t move up from the chat moderation rank, then simply you are not ready in our eyes. There will be promotions, and as you have recently seen, there can be demotions (you can clearly see the chat mods that were demoted simply were not fit for the role, things would be much worse if they just got a free pass to a moderator). How can we consider you competent for a moderator role when you may not even be suitable for a chat moderator role?

Literally, this is common sense, and coming from you Gavin (A manager) I'm surprised you didn't know that this is needed. Also I don't care if we're lacking staff we still cannot simply just remove the trial stages, otherwise you get people who are bias, immature and not fit for the job.

BUT, it could be good to hire straight Moderators and Administrators who have in real life qualifications.

Agreed with the second part.
Also if you want to keep bringing up my manager roles etc, I would PM me, because its getting annoying.
You just undermine my management in every statement .

While I completely agree with what you're saying (and yes I am aware chat moderators do not just handle chat moderation) you cannot say that the role is going to overwhelm everyone and that the answer to this issue is to place staff members in a trainee pool with fewer responsibilities. I am not saying there shouldn't be a form of a trainee system but I just don't think chat mod is the answer to that. Do what hundreds of companies and game networks do and take people in literally as a "Trainee" rank (or whatever you so wish to call it) where they are directly trained by veteran moderators. I am aware this is sort of what chat moderator is, but Chat Moderator brings along with it the connotation that their sole purpose is to moderate the chat. If their "real" purpose is to be tested and trained to potentially become a moderator then label them as such and take them through a sort of training "calendar" where maybe the first week or two they are given very basic responsibilities and shown the ropes and such and then evaluated, if they are doing well through that, move them on to another week or two of a new responsibility, evaluate them, and move on until they have been trained over the course of around three months and then give them a month on their own without a veteran moderate explaining things to them and instead they take a backseat and evaluate them.

I just find a system like this much better than the current chat moderator-trainee system. This system is predefined with the track the trainee should be on, evaluations so that each trainee is held to an exact standard of what is and what isn't against the rules, this would eliminate the current system of asking one mod, getting denied, so you ask another. I have heard of this occurring many times, especially with chatbox rules; and finally, it would create a more time-efficient system. Instead of some staff spending 6+ months as a Chat Mod before a demotion/promotion and others spending 1-2 months as a Chat Mod and then getting promoted, all of the "Trainee" staff are given a four or so month basis to complete their "trial" and be moved on to a promotion and they are working directly with an assigned moderator, so if they start to fall behind they can be spoken with and quickly demoted if it becomes a reoccurring issue. Also, I know that some staff are promoted faster because they can prove themselves, but this is not exactly the best system as, well, look at BucketOfSloths--most of the community thought he would be the saving grace in terms of getting rid of the report and SR clog based on his activity and quick promotion but then his activity very quickly fell and he even had Scam Reports he approved and started on from when he first got promoted and then never touched again (zero disrespect to Bucket though, he was a great staff member when he was active and had the time).

I understand MC-Market does not really have the manpower to run a system like this but it is a system which has been proven to work. Even on some large Minecraft networks (moderate cringe) such as Badlion, Mineplex, and even Hypixel in some regards. They run(ran) trial ranks with a specific time schedule where you are working directly with a veteran staff member and have a specific amount of time to get promoted (the timeline system is not at Hypixel, though).

So yeah, staff feel free to let me know what you think of this. I realize it has flaws in some areas but it has been proven to work elsewhere and it creates much more regulation in the trainee system.

Side note: if there are any typos or issues with this I apologize, my seasonal allergies are acting up and it's hard to see the screen when your eyes are getting watery and you have a tissue in one hand.

As a chat moderator myself, I must say that this role is imperative in the training to become a moderator on MCM. Being a Chat Mod prepares a user for what is to come with a promotion if they are deemed worthy in the future. Therefore, I disagree with your statement, as a user whom is promoted straight to moderator would be overwhelmed with all of the features and responsibilities.

As others have said, being a chat moderator is important to give new recruits limited permissions and the ability to work their way up to feedback moderator and then a full moderator once they've been active/excelled at the role for long enough.

Denied, thanks for the suggestion.
