Has anyone else heard the rumors that there are actually around 100,000 people in China infected with the virus? The rumor is that the Chinese government is covering it up in order to give off an appearance of strength.

There was a video of a Chinese nurse who backs this rumor up.

Here's the thing right.
A friend of mine is currently in university doing pre-med, and this topic came up in her class as a result of this media firestorm.

My memory of their account of their professor is as follows:
The Coronavirus is slightly more contagious and lethal than the common flu (Influenza A). The difference is that the flu has been around for forever, whereas the Coronavirus is foreign and technically, new.

From this, I have formed my interpretation.
The Coronavirus is a new variant of the same disease style that has been affecting our population for years. Social media has largely spread panic over the illness, and led to a far greater reaction than warranted.
I do worry this may grow a culture of distrust for Asian Americans in segments of the US particularly susceptible to social hysteria. I hope this quiets itself before it gets itself wrapped into politics and fear of something uncontrollable gets confused for something intentional.

I'm gonna go off on a bit of a conspiracy here, I suggest you do not consider any of the contents of this spoiler for any practical purposes.
Again, were going to crazy-land.

If you were in charge of an oppressive government involved in a number of human rights violations such as a hostile takeover of a city out of its jurisdiction, internment of minority groups and widespread oppression of civil liberties, and were seeing heavy international criticism. A good way to deflect that criticism would be to quietly release a contagious, lethal virus, then do an impressive job at managing it such that the international community feels pressured to stay on your good side should they need help from you containing that disease on their own shores.

I have not looked for nor seen any evidence that this is the case, this is purely hearsay. But it would be awfully convenient.

Think about it. 1720, 1820 and 1920 have all had major plague outbreaks.

1720 - The Great Plague of Marseille. 100k deaths.
1820 - cholera pandemic. 100k deaths.
1920 - Spanish Flu 100 million deaths.

So 2020 seems to be next on the list...

Nothing but a coincidence.
If there were no virus outbreaks *in between* those mentioned years, then this would be notable. But because the article is disregarding swine flu, ebola, etc that have happened in the past 10 or so years, it's just a coincidence.

no, i'm not.

be aware, be smart, you'll be safe - it primarily affects the older generation, if you read into it more it's easy to realise that the virus itself isn't killing people off, it's causing people (primarily the older generation) who cannot get treatment to end up with other viruses such as pneumonia, which is then killing people off.

my sister is very worried as she's flying from the UK to Australia then to New Zealand in a couple of weeks but hey ho my parents are abroad right now and they're fine, it's just another virus with its 15 seconds of fame imo

Bruh, are you still alive?
Just your typical virus. Legit nothing more than a unique name and fear mongering media outlets.

It may be true, but we're not soothsayers, anything can happen.
Someday the medications won't heal diseases.

The field of medicine will always advance just like the diseases will. It's an ongoing battle.

Ssh. Coincidences are really good at causing confusion and arguments.

now its 100 BILLION DEATHS!? RUN GUYS!!!
The pattern is K, K, 1,000K, 1,000K and then 1,000,000k
AKA corona will cause 100 Million deaths, but in 2120 there will be 100 Billion deaths.

Its a definite horror in the world right now but I wouldn't say I'm scared of it or anything, anxious and ready, but not scared. Its being actively worked on and researched so there's a good chance it'll be fine soon.

The virus itself is fairly contagious but if you're a healthy person with no real underlying health issues you should be fine if you somehow manage to contract the virus. The worst thing that could happen to change this is a mutation in the virus. A mutation could potentially make the virus more lethal or create new ways of transmitting the disease, such as the virus going airborne.
