Hi Guys,

Over this summer I am going to dedicate myself to learning some illustration skills. Illustration isn't a strong suit of mine and as a creative, I think I should at least try and improve in that area.

1) What Program would you recommend? I have access to pretty much all software due to being in University.
2) A tip you would give new artists.
3) And something that you should never rush or overlook when illustrating something.

Thank you :).

Clip Studio Paint has been my all time favorite drawing program so far plus it has an amazing platform for creators to make assets to share with others in the form of easy to use brushes, 3d models, textures etc.

A main thing I'll push is : Learn. Anatomy.

Don't learn from another person's drawings. You learn from basic human anatomy. Once you have that down proper THEN you can stylize it and find out how you prefer to push dimensions.

Also, break things down into basic shapes. Everything. Every ONE is just a conglomeration of shapes. Triangles, circles, and curves.

Don't be scared to draw over things or copy stuff. It's okay! Draw over a picture of someone if you like the pose they're making. Then erase it and draw it again while simply looking at it. Doing it the first time by drawing over it will teach you that you CAN do it and show you how it should look. Just remember that if you do trace something and post it, just mention that you did. Every artist has traced someone else's work at one point in time. But as long as you don't claim it as your own and you're ONLY doing it to learn, it is okay.

I have a Pinterest board full of references of different things that I break out all the time.

Really insightful, Thank you! I'm compiling a bunch of references and stuff now, I also have this super cool book of reference images to learn some anatomy from!

I'll be sure to check out Clip Studio, I am sure I've used that in the past. I'll see if they offer a student discount or licenses for free! Thank you :).

I appreciate the detailed reply!

I'm unsure about student discounts but I know they have monthly plans and a free trial and they do 50% off sales several times a year.
