Would Cloudflare be an option? I'm not very familiar with ddos protection so I could be wrong.

Cloudflare is specifically made for websites. If you were to use cloudflare, you could only use it for a server site, not the actual server itself.

CloudFlare actually do offer DDoS protection for Minecraft to their Pro and Business customers now, although they will only proxy up to 5GB traffic free per month. After that it is $1/GB traffic.

Your best option is to purchase a server from a host that already offers DDoS protection.
If this isn't viable, then you could purchase a cheap DDoS protected VPS and set up a GRE tunnel to your unprotected server. Although doing this will add latency and another point of failure.

Free and DDoS protection aren't words commonly used in the same sentence. Cloudflare isn't going to cover the applications you're running that aren't L7 (web applications). If you're looking for real protection, you're going to have to invest in something like ProxyPipe or TCPShield.

It's worth the money in my opinion.

TCPShield is free though?

OVH's ddos protection will be enough for the majority of servers, unless your community is extremely toxic.
